It’s 8.15am on a Monday morning and you’re after stubbing your toe on the edge of your bed whilst trying to find your darn phone and turn that alarm off. No time to snooze, as you have to be showered, dressed, fed and at your desk in less than 45minutes. At 8.55 you arrive at the office and run to the lift with your tie in one hand and your jacket in the other, but the lift is broken. Of course it is, it’s Monday morning…and everyone knows that nothing goes to plan on a Monday morning. So you hit the stairs (whilst starting to think that your toe may actually be broken) and you land at your desk right on the dot of 9am. Your boss gives you ‘that’ look, even though you’re on time, because although your contract says 9-5 it’s practically illegal not to do daily overtime in this place. It’s one of those unwritten rules that actually seem to dictate your role there instead of the contract you signed. You then log into the system and start your day’s work, all to earn money to afford to live the life you’ve become accustomed to – even if you don’t actually get to do much actual living outside of your work schedule these days. Your job is mind-numbingly boring and completely unsatisfying and yet you stay because it’s ‘easy’; because you’re ‘meant to’. And because you don’t believe in yourself enough to set yourself apart from those who go about this daily grind, without stopping to think about creating their own path to follow.
So this is what this post is about. This is what it’s for – to stop you and make you think; to remind you that you are a creative and passionate individual…you just need to find what it is that sparks those qualities within you and then find a way to make it your life’s work. You’ve probably had your morning coffee at this stage, so I’m losing you as we speak – because somehow caffeine makes everything feel that little bit ‘better’ doesn’t it? That’s why I’ve put together these top 5 reasons to put the coffee down, put your thinking cap on and create your own destiny.
‘Bye bye Boss’
When you start up your own business, you work for ‘you’…and everyone else does too! You can wave goodbye to monthly progress reports or that god awful micro management and be responsible for your own success and the success of your business instead. If your old Boss was a tough cookie, you can aim to be everything he/she wasn’t and you can treat your team the way you wish you were treated in the workplace. You can create something amazing. You can make people happy and you can make yourself happy. And it’s all you, you, you.
Work with nice People
Following on from the above, you pick your team. You can choose who you want to work with and what kind of people you want representing your company. Choosing the right people is the key to a happy and stress-free working environment!
Create your own Schedule
If your son has a baseball game then you can take the afternoon off and make a day of it, with no need to book time off or work around the office schedule. You work your own hours and on your own time and that’s an amazing freedom to have.
Travel
You can work from anywhere! Airport lounges, hotel rooms, the beach… you’re completely location independent and can travel to your heart’s content.
Change Perceptions!
By becoming a successful entrepreneur, you become someone who many people will respect and look to for guidance. You can use your position to instigate change where it’s needed, to help others on their journeys and to really stand up for what you believe in.
Now stop reading and start doing. ‘Change starts with you, but it doesn’t start until you do’. – Tom Ziglar
