The world of online travel booking woke up to some interesting news this morning as it was revealed that Amazon is entering the world of travel e-commerce. Amazon are expected to launch their own travel service for booking hotels and resorts in major cities worldwide in the next few months. The ecommerce Titan intends to roll out Amazon Travel in early January 2015 for a select number of hotels within a few hours’ commute from New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
Sources say that the participating hotels and resorts will pay a standard 15% commission to Amazon for the prepaid bookings.
Initially, Amazon intends to focus solely on hotels rather than flights or other travel products, but this is expected to change as 2015 progresses. Amazon is also fueling the growth of its travel business by putting out employment ads for travel market managers in Amazon Local in Boston and New York.
It remains to be seen if Amazon can dominate the world of online travel as they have the world of ecommerce and books, but it would take a brave person to bet against them.
