When it comes to your ecommerce website, you have plenty on your plate to consider. However, few things are as important or will have as big an effect on your chance at success as optimizing the site. Without getting the approval of popular search engines (especially Google), you could sell the secret to perfect health and not make a single dollar. Here are simple ways anyone can ensure the product pages on their ecommerce website are properly optimized.
Each product page on your website should have an accompanying image. That should go without saying. An image by itself isn’t enough, however. In fact, a poor image—one that is hard to see or make out the details on—may actually do more harm than good. Be sure the images you include are large and easy for the user to view.
Don’t necessarily stop at a single image either. If it makes sense to include more than one, be sure you do so. Your customers shouldn’t have to imagine parts of the product they can’t see.
Finally, images are great for your customers, but not necessarily enough to help your ecommerce website climb the ranks on Google. So be sure you’re adding in alt text for each image that is rich in keywords.
Speaking of keywords, make certain they appear in the copy for your product pages too. Don’t stop there either. You need those keywords in title tags and the meta descriptions of your pages too. If at all possible, make sure each product has its own page, so you can include keywords in its URL too.
One word about keywords, though: don’t overdo it. Oddly enough, search engines actually prefer when you write copy for humans. Google and others have become better at recognizing when someone is writing gibberish and sprinkling (or packing) in keywords where they think it works best. Not only will search engines pick up on this and drop your ecommerce website in its rankings, but customers won’t be too impressed either.
Whenever possible, go the extra mile too. Not nearly enough ecommerce sites out there add videos to their product pages, for example, settling for just an image instead. However, search engines love videos and so do customers, especially when they are used to show how the products work.
Having the world’s best product and better customer service than any of your competitors would be a couple great advantages to have on your side. Without following the above advice, though, even those advantages will only ever get you so far.
